Ralph & Sandra Moats with MVR Buttercup

Hi,
I am Sandra Moats the owner of MVR Morgans. My dear husband Ralph supported my interest in the wonderful Morgan horses. In September of 2002, we closed our breeding program and moved to New Mexico.
In July of 2001, Ralph and I were able to bring home our long awaited China daughter, Faith was then ten years old.  Since then we  have adopted three sisters and a brother for her, also from China.  They joinned our four grown children, and ten grandchildren, making us a large, full family.
With all the adoptions we had to sell all our Morgans.  But miraculously my Don came back to me in 2006.  We had a short time together before he left for the eternal green pastures.  I have one Morgan mare, and a Morgan therapy gelding named Adam coming in the spring.
I miss the farm in Montana where MVR Morgans was, but we have a mini farm here in Idaho now where we are pastors.  We have the best of both worlds I guess.  We live next to the church, and have our horses in the back.
I minister in other churches for Voice of the Martyrs.  I sharing about China, the precious orphans, and the Underground Church in China. I have traveled over the last ten years into deep parts of China. In my travels I have been able to find valuable information on the Morgan horses that were sold to China over fifty years ago. If you are interested in learning more about the China Morgans please go to my page China Morgans at the top.

I was blessed to breed the Classic Old Line Morgans for  twelve years. My love affair with the Morgans began with a beautiful black, Classic Old Line Morgan, named Windswept Ruth.
Our daughter had a serious horse accident that left her fearful whenever she was around horses. But Ruth broke through, and brought enjoyment back into Rebecca's life.  Ruth became a life long friend.
She also became my first foundation mare when I began to breed the Morgans. After many wonderful years, in the fall of 2000, she couldn't get up and we had to bid her a final farewell. It was a tearful passing for our whole family. Ruth would have been 26 years old in spring of 2001.
She is lovingly remembered by our whole family who learned to ride on her, and also by the many children who came to our farm to learn to ride. She was the teacher, and the infant babysitter for all the weaned babies. She loved everyone, and everything. During all her years with us we never saw anything but goodness come from her.   Her special old friend Sugar dearly missed her. Ruth was a beautiful, rare dispositioned mare.
In 1988, I fell in love with a beautiful black stallion, named Montezsierradon, along with half of Penn Valley in California. Every time we went to church we passed his pasture. Don always had his head hanging over the fence so people could pet him. He was coal black with 4 small white socks, and a big white star. He had a full, long mane and tail. He was stunning!
One day I stopped to ask if Don possibly were for sale. Tom Jackson, the nice man who had raised Don, quickly told me he was not. But we became friends, and he let me bring Don carrots for the next four years. Tom  raised Don to be a perfect gentleman. He taught him tricks along with his cow training. Don loved working the Cattle, and he was part of many cattle drives in Calfornia.
To my surprise on April 7,  in 1992 (it was my birthday) I stopped to say hi to Don, and Tom, and his wife Betty. We were getting ready to move to Montana. I asked Tom just once more, would he consider selling me Don. That time he looked at me, and said , he and Betty talked last night, and they had decided they would sell me Don. Tom was getting up in age, and wanted to make sure Don had a good home.
We celebrated with lots of carrots for Montezsierradon. Of course he was thrilled.
Our Second foundation mare came just before we headed out for Montana. She almost didn't make the train, so to speak. Lady Valiant TBN is a beautiful black Classic Old Line Morgan.  She came up in the local newspaper for sale. She was classified as dangerous. I felt strongly to go see her. First sight I knew I would take her to Montana with me for my breeding program. Lady  proved to be extremely valuable for producing our strong Sport Morgans in the Classic Old Lines. She also ended up being my favorite riding mare, and Don's favorite girl.

Lady Valiant TBM

Lady Valiant TBM never produced any color other than black. All of her offspring were natural dressage quality foals. All were 15 plus hands with substance and presense, along with kind dispositions. They were all very sensible and quiet natured. Lady carried 7 Jubilee King and 61 black crosses in her first 8 generations.
In May of 2000 her filly MVR Midnight Miss was sold to Germany for a special breeding program there. She was my favorite mare.

At MVR Morgans, quality always came first. MVR Morgan horses are wonderful partners that will become your best friend. I choose the Classic Old bloodlines of General Gates and Jubilee King. The cross produced sizeable, good natured, reliable, and well-behaved mounts plus they were black and beautiful.
Color was important because MVR Morgans specialized in the blacks within these particular lines. But the most important consideration was the character of the offspring. By careful adherence and fine tuning to our breeding plan we were able to produce black Morgans with outstanding sport, and endurance ability.   They possessed quiet and loving spirits, and were known for their kind dispositions.
It is my opinion that the Classic Old Line Morgans are the most fascinating part of the Morgan  breed.

THE MVR MORGANS BREEDING PROGRAM...
Basically it consisted of bringing the Classic Old Lines of General Gates and Jubilee King up close on the pedigrees. There were many crosses within the first 8-10 generations on each breeding horse.
I looked for old black Morgan mares carrying those lines, and begin breeding them to my stallion Montezsierradon. Some were too old to conceive, but from those that did, the lines came through beautifully.
In 1998, I was able to locate a 29 year old stallion who was the offspring of Clement, called Turfwood Royal Flush.  Royal was a former National Champion who possessed in his bloodlines and conformation, and disposition what I needed. I imported him into our breeding program to bring the Jubilee King lines in closer, and stronger.
It worked!  His filly by MVR Rose was worth all the efforts. Born as his first black offspring she bore the the Jubilee King look I was after. MVR Rose foaled a stunning black stud colt in 2001 to Turfwood Royal Flush. This colt MVR Midnight Royal Flush is the combination of our total breeding program at MVR Morgans.  Look for him in the show ring in the future.  I believe he holds the potential to being a World Champion.
